(HONOLULU, HI) December 20, 2018 – Honolulu-based concert promoter Rick Bartalini Presents is proud to announce that music legend Johnny Mathis will return to Honolulu in 2019 due to popular demand. After completely selling out his 2018 Christmas concerts, Mathis will return to Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall on December 20 & 21, 2019. A Johnny Mathis Christmas 2019 will feature the beloved icon performing timeless holiday classics as well as his greatest hits. The accompanying 35-piece orchestra will proudly showcase the talent of Honolulu’s very best musicians.
Affectionately referred to as “Mr. Christmas” by Ms. Oprah Winfrey, Johnny is inundated with offers to perform during the holiday season. For this reason, Rick Bartalini Presents is extremely proud to have him choose Honolulu to perform this rare concert.
“Christmas is very special for me. There were seven of us growing up
and my mom and dad always made it such a wonderful, magical time.”
— Johnny Mathis
Mathis released his first smash holiday album Merry Christmas in 1958 to universal acclaim. The album ultimately became one of the Top 10 best-selling Christmas albums of all time and paved the way for several successful holiday albums. Johnny was just nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for his Sending You A Little Christmas album, alongside pop luminaries Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Annie Lennox, Tony Bennett, and Lady Gaga.
Johnny’s accomplishments are not limited to his holiday hits. He has received four other Grammy nominations, including one in 2010 for Let It Be Me – Mathis In Nashville. This nomination, for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, is all the more remarkable because it was his first foray into classic country music. Johnny has also been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times for “Chances Are”, “Misty”, and “It’s Not for me to Say”. Record historian Joel Whitburn notes that Johnny is one of only five recording artists to have Top 40 Hits spanning each of his first four decades as a recording artist. As of 2013, he has now had a hit in every decade of his career thanks to his lovely song with Jim Brickman, “Sending You a Little Christmas,” which peaked at #4 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart! Most impressive of all is his 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
As if this weren’t enough, Johnny continues to be honored in many different ways. In 2011, he performed for former Secretary of State Colin Powell and received the Gold Medal of the Academy of Achievement at the Academy’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., acknowledging his many accomplishments throughout his career. In 2013, he received the Art Gilmore Career Achievement Award from the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters for Radio & Television, and was inducted into the America’s Pop Music Hall of Fame.
Celebrating his 62nd year in the music industry, legendary singer Johnny Mathis’ sublime vocal approach to music eclipses passing fads and trends. He has performed songs in an incredible variety of styles and categories — from music composed for stage and film to golden era jazz standards, contemporary pop hits, and holiday music, all of which has assured his reputation as one of the most enduring vocalists in music history.
Best-known for his supremely popular hits like “Chances Are”, “It’s Not for me to Say”, “Misty”, and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, Johnny has recorded close to 80 albums, including six Christmas albums that have made him the undisputed and iconic “Voice of Christmas.”
After over 60 years as a recording artist, what’s next for Johnny? The artist replies: “I don’t think about retiring. I think about how I can keep singing for the rest of my life.”
